DTR FILM COLLECTION

The Department of Tropical Research (DTR) Film Collection is composed of motion pictures created by the New York Zoological Society (NYZS)’s DTR between approximately 1920 and 1966. Formats include black-and-white and color motion pictures; the majority are silent, 16mm, acetate films. The bulk of the collection consists of films shot in expedition locations in the West Indies and South America. These films document the day-to-day ecological field studies conducted by DTR staff members of wildlife in their native habitats. Many films in this collection were used to promote the DTR’s scientific research to the public; some featured in newsreels, and others were standard accompaniments for in-person scientific lectures, including lectures to NYZS members.
